The Things You Need to Know About Adoption in the US

My sister has just adopted a child recently and in her journey for adoption, I never thought that it would take her months to process. Before I thought it would just take a couple of weeks and would just cost less than $10,000 for the whole process but my sister got it all above $15,000. With this I realize, it’s not that easy to adopt a child, you have to know all the facts about it because if not you’ll be blinded with all the myths and misconceptions about its whole process. So for those people who want to adopt a child in the US, here are the important things you need to know about it:
  1. You need to conduct your own research about adoption so you can decide if it’s the best option for you. In order to find more information about what you are looking for, there are lots of websites, books and magazines that you can look at.
  2. After reading up about it, you will be able to figure out that there are two main ways to conduct adoption in the US. You can do it independently or with an adoption agency to assist you with the process.
  3. As for the adoption agency, there are two types of it that you can choose from; private and public adoption agencies. Private agencies are mostly concern with finding homes for infants while public agencies cater waiting children or those in foster homes. Depending on the choice of child you want to adopt, you can choose any of the two agencies to assist you.
  4. The biggest concern most parents who want to adopt a child is the financial aspect of the whole process. The adoption process in the US is quite expensive so if you want to adopt a child make sure that you have the money to fund the whole process.
  5. Any money that you will part with for adoption is a funding to assist in the legal consultation and social work of the whole process. Mostly adoption process can range to $4,000-$20,000.
  6. Once you have chosen and already settled in your agency of choice, you will be required to complete a home study. In this process you and the social worker that is assigned to you will have a couple of meetings to ensure that you are capable of taking good care of a child that you are to adopt.
  7. You will also need to submit certain documents to assist with the process such as birth certificates and child abuse clearances. This will also serve as supporting documents to ensure that you are capable of taking good care a child.
When all this processes are complete and your home study has been approved, the search for a child begins. There are websites in the internet that features some kids that are up for adoption, this is a great place to start looking for the child that you wish to adopt. In addition, if your social worker finds information of children who would be a great match to you they should be able to contact you with that information.

Once you have found a child you feel match to you, your social worker and the child’s social worker will then exchange information and if all parties agree then you can visit the child and with time you can already bring the adoptee to your family home.

If you wish to be assisted by a private or public adoption agency in your journey to adopt a child, contact information of the different adoption agencies in the US are available at www.NationalSocialServices.org, a directory of social services in the United States.
